European Identity. European Architecture

The role of Greece concerns only its roots, or is also a contributor in contemporary times? Cry

By Eva Kapadoukaki

Greek version

The public debate on the identity of architecture in Europe began at the 2014 Biennale di Venezia and it's supported by the European Union (Creative Europe) and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. In cooperation with Nihao Films, a series of interviews among 16 european architects has been filmed and it's available online, shaping a panorama of views from London to Lisbon and from Bucharest to Trondheim. The question is not looking for a single answer but rather an ongoing reflection of the architects' visions, through their experience as teachers, researchers and practising professionals in and outside Europe. The architects are asked whether there is a European identity, what qualities stand out in their locality as a European city, and also what values they think should be reflected in the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award, as all of them have been involved in the Prize as nominees. The project seeks for the common european values, the sum of identities, as the values of harmonious coexistence of people, places and layers of history.
