Over the past few years, interest in residential architecture, which for some decades had been marginalized, has risen once more worldwide. The "return to residences" commenced at the 2006 Venice Biennale, whose theme was the modern metropolis; then continued with a series of international exhibitions.
Within this framework, the exhibition, which appears to be particularly timely, makes a review of “landmark” residential designs in modern architecture, presenting and recording the phases of development and the trends in residential architecture from the 20th to the 21st century.
The purpose of the exhibition is to “open up” architecture to a broader public, which to date has approached housing mainly from a commercial standpoint; to render specific groups more sensitive and to mobilize them in order to highlight the work of architecture and to improve the residential standards; and, finally, to correlate modern architecture with contemporary materials and new technologies.
The exhibition will show approximately 60 houses by award-winning Greek architects, selected from a total of 175 invitations to participate in a competition issued by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. The participations submitted include work by: A66 – D. & S. Antonakaki; Apostolakos Architects; Aik. Valsamaki; I. & A. Vikelas; deca ARCHITECTURE; D. Diamantopoulos; P. Dragonas – V. Christopoulou; T. Exarchopoulos; A. Zambikos; D. Issaïas – T. Papaioannou, N. Ktenas; A. Kotsiopoulos – E. Chalkiopoulou;
