Digital Manufacturing 2011 workshop, Kuala Lumpur

in architecture and design workshop 2011.(7-12/02/2011)

By Asterios Agkathidis

Greek version

Apart from enlarging the design possibilities and capabilities of the participants, this workshop can be seen as a strong platform to introduce the ever changing computational design and manufacturing technologies in the architectural world today.

At the end of the workshop, the participants are expected to be able to learn new skills and design approaches that will prepare them to be highly competitive in the field, both regionally and internationally. As the workshop will focus on learning and experimenting with design, it is suitable to anyone who wants to be challenged and is ready to embrace new design techniques regardless of their architectural background.

The workshop also can be seen as a starting point in the hope that it be held in series, so as to give the same benefits to an even larger group of local future architects.

The first phase of the workshop consists of rhinosr08 tutorials joined with a morphogenetic phases. In the second phase, more on technicality, we will be focusing on manufacturing drawings and production technologies and finally in the third phase, the produced structures will be transformed into 1 to 1 ‘patches' of a greater structure which will be built by different elements.

We will be aiming on a ground-up production of geometrical parametric systems, able to generate spatial and structural constructs. We will explore such a procedure from early morphological studies, till the production of physical prototypes. The schools laser cutting machine will be used for this purpose.

Following Axel Killians morphogenetic surface/design surface approach we will focus on the notion of the unit as possible design instrument. By the use of unrolling, sectioning, tiling, framing, and molding techniques, we will explore relations between materials and CNC manufacturing technologies in 1 to 1 scale.

The final installation structure will be put together out of 12 different ‘tiles' in the size of 50x50cm, all generated based on the given manufacturing chain.

The studio consists of computational classes, pin-up and desk critique sessions. The produced material will be documented and published internationally.

The workshop is open to current architecture students at undergraduate and graduate levels, recent graduates, and individuals from design-oriented fields interested in the study and implementation of digital manufacturing in architecture. The participants should register early to secure their places as participation is limited.

The deadline for application is 17 January 2011.
