Ioannis Vikelas : Architectural Pursuits 1958-2010

The exhibition offers a selection from the oeuvre of architect Ioannis Vikelas, from the start of his professional career in 1960 to the present day. (until 25/07)

Ioannis Vikelas was born in Paris in 1931. He studied at the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and graduated in 1955.

In a career that has spanned more than fifty years he has designed and supervised over 800 projects: town planning groups, apartment complexes, housing developments, mansions, office buildings, ministry buildings, town halls, libraries, educational institutions, hospitals, industrial buildings, church buildings, museums, exhibition pavilions, shops and banks, shopping malls, movie theatres, airports, factories, public parking structures, landscaping for public areas and squares, funerary monuments. He was also involved renovations and refurbishments of historical buildings and has designed most of the tall buildings (Skyscrapers) in Athens.

The exhibition will include architectural drawings covering a very broad spectrum of content. Certain of these projects were designed by him individually, while others were carried out in collaboration with other architects. His best-known works include the Athens Tower, Ambelokipi, Athens (1969), the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Athens (1976, in collaboration with P. Michaleas), the Astir Palace Hotel, Athens (1979, in collaboration with architects Em. Vourekas, S. Molfesis & K. Dekavallas), the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (1985).
