Abstract

"The building is foremost a criticism concerning our future neighborhood, a manifesto that will affect the entire city-scape. The project a design course related to architectural constructions built during eras of war and turmoil. The deconstruction characteristics of the previews phenomena, have been already transplanted into the city matrix; a fact that led to the need for contemporary ways of survival."

The new data which have been shaping Athens' contemporary urban landscape, gave "fear" - one among the main, initiative human mental states - the opportunity to grow untrammeled. Disclaimer and repulsion for spaces, continuous introversion and vestigial social life into confined and limited spaces are supposed to be the main characteristics. The multiple reasons that led us here are profound and commonly accepted. Architecture itself is unable to deeply deal with the problems in order to present a satisfying solution / suggestion. As a matter of fact, it (ref. Architecture) already begun to embody the features of the physical persons or corporations that practice it in real scale. Furthermore, the constant turbulence which is taking place on the streets combined to the disturbing tranquility and stagnation of citizens' private spaces do justice to the great sci-fi authors of the previews century concerning the image of the future "metropolis" that they provided us.

The related architectural project is basically a criticism on how our neighborhood will be a few years from now, a manifesto that will affect the entire city-scape. It partially functions as one of the 20th century bunker, however the levels where any movement or activity that takes place is deliberately located above the ground/road level - which is obviously against "war bunkers" construction's logic that forces them underneath the ground. Project D24′s aim nowadays is to "protect" the members of rather small urban communities from the rampant of the street level, meaning the primary level of the city.

Specifically, the whole design was based not only in real life scenarios, but also in war-related structures' typologies and ominous, sci-fi scenarios. Most of the basic functions are specified according to closely related information gathered from books of urban survival. Another important element is the ability given to users, concerning the management of specific spaces in a way relevant to their unique needs - that is to say a kind of "alternative programmatic potentiality.

Moreover, the entire building in general functions somehow "mechanically", that is to say that in any given moment, it is capable of discarding, reconstructing and replacing most of its parts through a 1:1 scale 3d printer - also used during the construction of the building (for more info concerning this part you can see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yv-IWdSdns). Following this constant "self-renovation", it can gradually expand itself throughout the urban matrix, adjusting its topology and geometry on the existing roofs. Through this point of view, numerous mechanical elements, which played an active and fundamental role during the construction process, are being attached to the whole project while their characteristics change partly by obtaining additional utilities.

The presented project is divided into 3 main "isles". The first one contains the security and control department, underground parking lots, temporary storage area, communication faculty and a temporary working / construction site. The next one is divided into an infirmary clinic with the relative equipment, a random activity place for the entire community (gym, target shooting area and more), a small restaurant and lecture hall / class. It is also the part of the project where the auxiliary control station is located and of course a vast roof-space for a helicopter and container-boxes. The third part functions as continuity to the second isle and it is divided into smaller parts capable of being hired by any citizen. These rooms can function as mostly private places. Also, the construction crane is embodied, a hint that helps not only the expansion of the project but also the transportation of general goods inside-out the "bunker".
