This study explores the emergence of the river Ilissos and the creation of a network of public spaces along the bank.

Ilissos is one of the largest rivers that flowed through the city of Athens. Today, most of its part is canalized into underground routes.   The study area extends from the park of Goudi, to the church of Saint Fotini and it is characterized by significant public spaces and buildings such as the National Garden, the  Rizari Park, the National Gallery and Concert Hall. However, the public space remains fragmented and not accessible to the residents while the problem is exacerbated by the public transport.
The design intends to highlight the special identity of each region. The alternations in geometry, materials, colors and the atmosphere has resulted in a continuous "cinematic walk" that comes through the city of Athens and redefines the urban landscape.
Furthermore, under the current requirements for sustainable urban development, an extensive survey of modern applications of rainwater management, enforced and inspired the design palette of this proposal. Artificial wetlands, green roofs, permeable pavements and underground tanks are some examples used for the collection, purification and recycling of rainwater.

RIZARI PARK
In this region we suggest a park that mimics the nature. The park has lush vegetation and in its core is designed an artificial wetland. Deciduous and evergreen trees, plants, flowers and riparian vegetation, create a recreational area which varies during the year.

PANATHENAIC STADIUM
The space next to the Stadium and next to the Zappeion is treated differently. The aim is to create a "hard" square at the level of the bank. The idea of the explosion is what triggers the provocative design of the square marked by the sharp folds of the concrete walls. The wooden promenade crosses the square, giving the opportunity for interaction and entertainment.

SAINT FOTINI
This area features two sections. The first follows the Panathenaic Stadium and has vertical wetlands that form the bed of the stream while the vegetation is restricted in specific geometries. The second and final part of the intervention is next to the church of Saint Fotini and still remains open today. At the level of the river-bed Ilissos retains its natural character and in our proposition is suggested the reinforcement of the existing vegetation and the design of paths which will facilitate the movement of pedestrians.
