Profile

Agnes Couvelas - Panagiotatou, b. 1943 Architect, NTUA 1966.

Since 1969, Agnes Couvelas has operated her own architecture firm in Athens, realizing a broad spectrum of projects. Among these projects are the In-Situ Archaeological Museum in Naxos, the Marathon Tumulus Archaeological Park, The museum of Prehistoric Thera rehabilitation and “The house of the Winds” at Santorini.

Tracing the nature of the architectural approach in her works, one could discern a sense of correspondence of the finished work with the “genius loci”, the spirit of the site. This relation manifests itself in a dynamic way, by means of a continuous dialogue with the particular physical, social and cultural “reality” of the surroundings.

Nonetheless, the majority of Couvelas’ designs share common ground in terms of internal consistency and economy of form. An austere geometrical language features prominently in the majority of her buildings.

Agnes Couvelas has published on a variety of topics in these fields, and lectures frequently on architecture in Greece and abroad.
