ALKYON. Sailing club of Rafina, Athens

This diploma project is about the design of the "ALKYON" Sailing Club of Rafina. It is located in the big port of the town of Rafina, in the East of Athens, which serves multiple uses, not only for the athletes/members of the club, but for the fishermen (professional or amateur) as well.

The most important element of the plan is the steep mountain side on the South-west boarder, on the top of which, there is the small church of Saint Nicolas, which is the landmark of the area.

This new design was created by a combination of lines, inspired by the nature of sailing, the moves of the athletes and the boat's reaction according to the wind. More specifically,

A.      The movement of the boat inside and out of the water.

B.      Its position at the start line of a sailing race.

C.      The correct angle between the sails and the boat's axis, according to the wind at the start line.

Thus, the existing straight coastal line gets its own form gradually, creating all the necessary spaces for the boats and the facilities on land.

On the North side of the plot, where there used to be a breakwater, there is now the main athletes building. It has a strong connection with the water from its 3 sides, while the 4^th is connecting the building with the small church above. Here, there is the boat's storing area, with changing rooms, 2 classrooms and a haunt for the athletes. On the terrace, there is a space for common use, ideal for viewing sailing races in short distance.

In the middle, of the new coastline there is a secondary building, which provides the club's offices with a big space and a café-restaurant for the members, the fishermen and the visitors.

Finally, 2 paths were designed to connect the Saint Nicolas church and the club, as well as  another spot on the North of the club. The last path ends up as a floating platform, which makes this small bay approachable by land and sea.
