Summary
The starting point of this lecture is the ambition to explore the concept of utopia as it is used in the vocabulary of architects today, realizing that the ecological problem is, with great momentum, changing the terms of the debate on the significance of the word. Starting from the breakthrough of the modern movement in urban thinking, I examine the architectural formulations for the problem of the city, which in one way or another acquired the characterization "utopian" throughout the 20th century, while holding as a connecting thread the way in which the concept of natural and artificial, nature and city is conceived in each case. The focus of this examination is not on the technical details, but on the clarification of the broader conceptual background of these formulations, through the prism of cultural conditions that inevitably steer them. And that is because it is of great importance, beyond the understanding of the expectations brought on by modernity up to date and whose these formulations are vectors, to ask ourselves what are the factors that shaped and continue to shape our expectations. Today, that the certainties seem to be staggering.
