Dance and Music Art Center (DaMAC) in Klafthmonos Square

This diploma project concerns a public dance & music art center. It is located in the historic center of Athens in front of Klafthmonos square. The aim of the intervention is to create a versatile attraction in the city center that will enable artists who lack resources and equipment to take part in workshops, seminars and learning performances, to train and display their own work with the aegis of the municipality of Athens and the Ministry of Education. The most important element, however, is the possibility of regular accommodation of artists in the same site where they work and create. The synthesis surpasses the strict limits of the p[particular site and proposes interventions in the entire city block as well as main planning principles for Klafthmonos square. Furthermore, synthesis is also based on the projection of Themistoclean walls, ruins of which lie beneath the square, and the formulation of basic movements that connect Korai Square and the subway "Panepistimio" to Karytsi and Evripidou street. As far as the block is concerned, an attempt to connect the internal open spaces of three cultural buildings, the Museum of the City of Athens, the Parnassus Literary Society and DaMAC is being made. Finally, the building itself is based on the principle of an 'open' building for the city in which the sightseer has concurrent oversight of the city and the artistic events during his course throughout the building.
